Now the determination and classification of an execution class to a project or part of a project, falls fully within the responsibilities of the designer / specifier.

The default clause to EXC 2 within section 4.1.2 EN 1090-2:A1 2011 has been removed, along with the Determination of Execution Classes within Annex B.3 EN 1090-2:A1 2011.

Now, not only does the designer / specifier have to state the execution class, but also when the product to be manufactured requires supplementary non-destructive testing (NDT).

The new 1090-2:2018 does not automatically state the percentage requirement for supplementary NDT to individual projects / assemblies, but instead states an annual percentage per weld type (inspection lot) that the fabrication company have to apply and record.

If the designer / specifier does not state within the contract documentation or drawings a specific requirement for NDT (%) to be carried out, the fabricator will have no contractual requirement under EN 1090 to carry any NDT testing for the items manufactured for that project. There would still be a requirement for the fabricator to record routine inspection of welds to table 24.

Contract specific NDT requirements may be specified within the contract requirements as for example:

· Specific NDT percentage requirements stated within the contract specification
· NDT requirements detailed within design calculations
· NDT requirements stated within client issued drawings
· Contract specification states compliance to NSSS
· Contract specification states a Weld Inspection Class (WIC)
· Other contract specific references may also be stated

Our members continually voice their concerns regarding the lack of information received from the specifiers and contractors design teams, it will be interesting to see how these changes are received and actioned by the specifiers and engineers as the fabrication company’s start to understand the changes.
